Lean Coffee is a simple and effective method of learning and collaboration through discussion.

Procedure
The starting point is a Kanban board with three columns (To Do | Doing | Done), which can be drawn on a flipchart, for example. All possible topics are now briefly presented and then it is voted which topics should be discussed to what extent. This is done by giving each participant three votes, which can be distributed among the topics or given to just one topic.

The topics are then ranked in the “To Do” column. The top topics are moved, as an agenda, to the “Doing” column. A timer is set to 5 minutes (variable), which is the time frame for discussion. After the time has expired, a short vote is taken to see if there is a need for further discussion (thumbs up, thumbs down, or sideways). If yes, the timer is set to a shorter duration (e.g. 3 minutes) to continue the discussion. This can be repeated until the group loses interest in the topic. The topic is then moved to the “Done” column and the next topic with the same or closest percentage below it takes its turn.

Vorgehensweise
Ausgangspunkt ist ein Kanban-Board mit drei Spalten (To Do | Doing | Done), welches man beispielsweise auf ein Flipchart zeichnen kann. Alle möglichen Themen werden nun kurz vorgestellt und anschließend wird abgestimmt, welche Themen inwieweit diskutiert werden sollen. Das geschieht, indem jeder Teilnehmende drei Stimmen hat, welche auf die Themen verteilt werden können oder auch nur an ein Thema gegeben werden können.

Die Themen werden danach in einem Ranking in der Spalte „To Do“ zusammengefasst. Die Top Themen werden, als Agenda, in die Spalte „Doing“ verschoben. Ein Timer wird auf 5 Minuten (variabel) gestellt, was das Zeitfenster für Diskussion darstellt. Nach Ablauf der Zeit wird kurz abgestimmt ob noch weiterer Diskussionsbedarf besteht (Daumen hoch, runter oder seitlich). Falls ja, wird der Timer auf eine kürzere Dauer gesetzt (z.B. 3 Minuten), um die Diskussion fortzusetzen. Das kann so lange wiederholt werden, bis die Gruppe das Interesse an dem Thema verliert. Das Thema wird anschließend in die Spalte „Done“ verschoben und das nächste Thema mit dem selben oder am nächsten darunterliegenden Prozentsatz ist an der Reihe.
